Relative vs Absolute Grading
How relative and absolute grading differ in Pakistan
Comparison table: absolute grading uses fixed bands, relative grading curves against class performance. In relative grading, a class need not award every grade, and thresholds are not fixed.
| Absolute grading | Relative grading | |
|---|---|---|
| Grade bands | Fixed percentage bands | Curved, no fixed bands |
| Example universities | Bahria, SZABIST, COMSATS | NUST, LUMS, UET Lahore |
| What to use | University percentage table | Course outline and class curve |
How it works
Absolute grading maps fixed percentage bands to grades. Relative grading curves grades against class performance, so there are no fixed percentage bands. NUST, LUMS, and UET Lahore use relative grading in many courses. That is why fixed band tables for those universities are wrong.
