How to Calculate GPA With a Failed Subject?

Short answer: Include the F course. An F carries 0 grade points but its credit hours stay in the denominator, so it pulls GPA down. Example: 9 credits at 3.00 plus a 3 credit F gives 27 quality points divided by 12 credits, which is 2.25 GPA. Retaking the course may change the result depending on your university repeat rule.

Formula

GPA equals total quality points divided by total credit hours. CGPA equals total quality points across all semesters divided by total credit hours. Quality points for a course equal grade points times credit hours.
